ButIshutitup,andcheckedmythoughtswiththisconclusion: first,thatwedidnotknowbywhatlightandlawtheseshouldbecondemned; butthatGodwasnecessarily,and,bythenatureofHisbeing,infinitelyholyandjust,soitcouldnotbebutthatifthesecreatureswereallsentencedtoabsencefromHimself,itwasonaccountofsinningagainstthatlight,which,astheScripturesays,wasalawtothemselves,andbysuchrulesastheirconscienceswouldacknowledgetobejust,thoughthefoundationwasnotdiscoveredtous; and,second,thatstill,aswearealltheclayinthehandofthepotter,novesselcouldsaytoHim, "WhyhastThouformedmethus?"
Buttoreturntomynewcompanion. Iwasgreatlydelightedwithhim,andmadeitmybusinesstoteachhimeverythingthatwaspropertomakehimuseful,handy,andhelpful; butespeciallytomakehimspeak,andunderstandmewhenIspake. Andhewastheaptestscholarthateverwas;andparticularlywassomerry,soconstantlydiligent,andsopleasedwhenhecouldbutunderstandme,ormakemeunderstandhim,thatitwasverypleasanttometotalktohim. AndnowmylifebegantobesoeasythatIbegantosaytomyself,thatcouldIbuthavebeensafefrommoresavages,IcarednotifIwasnevertoremovefromtheplacewhileIlived.
