Thisfrequentlygavemeoccasiontoobserve,andthatwithwonder,thathoweverithadpleasedGod,inHisprovidence,andinthegovernmentoftheworksofHishands,totakefromsogreatapartoftheworldofHiscreaturesthebestusestowhichtheirfacultiesandthepowersoftheirsoulareadapted,yetthatHehasbestoweduponthemthesamepowers, thesamereason,thesameaffections,thesamesentimentsofkindnessandobligation,thesamepassionsandresentmentsofwrongs,thesamesenseofgratitude,sincerity,fidelity,andallthecapacitiesofdoinggood,andreceivinggood,thatHehasgivetous; andthatwhenHepleasestooffertothemoccasionsofexertingthese,theyareasready,nay,moreready,toapplythemtotherightusesforwhichtheywerebestowedthatweare. Andthismademeverymelancholysometimes,inreflecting,astheseveraloccasionspresented,howmeanausewemakeofallthese,eventhoughwehavethesepowersenlightenedbythegreatlampofinstruction,theSpiritofGod,andbytheknowledgeofHisWordaddedtoourunderstanding; andwhyithaspleasedGodtohidethelikesavingknowledgefromsomanymillionsofsouls,who,ifImightjudgebythispoorsavage,wouldmakeamuchbetteruseofitthanwedid.
