AndnowIbegantothinksedately; andupontheutmostdebatewithmyself,Iconcludedthatthisisland,whichwassoexceedingpleasant,fruitful,andnofartherfromthemainlandthanasIhadseen,wasnotsoentirelyabandonedasImightimagine; thatalthoughtherewerenostatedinhabitantswholivedonthespot,yetthattheremightsometimescomeboatsofffromtheshore,who,eitherwithdesign,orperhapsneverbutwhentheyweredrivenbycross-winds,mightcometothisplace; thatIhadlivedherefifteenyearsnow,andhadnotmetwiththeleastshadoworfigureofanypeopleyet; andthatifatanytimetheyshouldbedrivenhere,itwasprobabletheywentawayagainassoonasevertheycould,seeingtheyhadneverthoughtfittofixthereuponanyoccasiontothistime; thatthemostIcouldsuggestanydangerfrom,wasfromanysuchcasualaccidentallandingofstragglingpeoplefromthemain,who,asitwaslikely,iftheyweredrivenhither,werehereagainsttheirwills; sotheymadenostayhere,butwentoffagainwithallpossiblespeed,seldomstayingonenightonshore,lesttheyshouldnothavethehelpofthetidesanddaylightbackagain; andthat,therefore,Ihadnothingtodobuttoconsiderofsomesaferetreat,incaseIshouldseeanysavageslanduponthespot.
