Oh,whatridiculousresolutionmentakewhenpossessedwithfear! Itdeprivesthemoftheuseofthosemeanswhichreasonoffersfortheirrelief. ThefirstthingIproposedtomyselfwastothrowdownmyenclosures,andturnallmytamecattlewildintothewoods,thattheenemymightnotfindthem,andthenfrequenttheislandinprospectofthesameorthelikebooty; thentothesimplethingofdiggingupmytwocornfields,thattheymightnotfindsuchagrainthere,andstillbepromptedtofrequenttheislandthentodemolishmybowerandtent,thattheymightnotseeanyvestigesofhabitation,andbepromptedtolookfarther,inordertofindoutthepersonsinhabiting.
Thesewerethesubjectofthefirstnight’scogitation,afterIwascomehomeagain,whiletheapprehensionswhichhadsooverrunmymindwerefreshuponme,andmyheadwasfullofvapors,asabove. Thusfearofdangerisoftenthousandtimesmoreterrifyingthandangeritselfwhenapparenttotheeyes;andwefindtheburdenofanxietygreater,bymuch,thantheevilwhichweareanxiousabout; and,whichwasworsethanallthis,IhadnotthatreliefinthistroublefromtheresignationIusedtopractice,thatIhopedtohave.
