Whilethesereflectionswererollinguponmymind,IwasverythankfulinmythoughtsthatIwassohappyasnottobethereaboutsatthattime,orthattheydidnotseemyboat,bywhichtheywouldhaveconcludedthatsomeinhabitantshadbeenintheplace,andperhapshavesearchedfartherforme. Thenterriblethoughtsrackedmyimaginationabouttheirhavingfoundmyboat,andthattherewerepeoplehere; andthatifso,Ishouldcertainlyhavethemcomeagainingreaternumbers,anddevourme; thatifitshouldhappensothattheyshouldnotfindme,yettheywouldfindmyenclosure,destroyallmycorn,carryawayallmyflockoftamegoats,andIshouldperishatlastformerewant.
Thusmyfearbanishedallmyreligioushope. AllthatformerconfidenceinGod,whichwasfoundeduponsuchwonderfulexperienceasIhadhadofHisgoodness,nowvanished,asifHethathadfedmebymiraclehithertocouldnotpreserve,byHispower,theprovisionwhichHehadmadeformebyHisgoodness. Ireproachedmyselfwithmyeasiness,thatwouldnotsowanymorecornoneyearthanwouldjustservemetillthenextseason,asifnoaccidentcouldintervenetopreventmyenjoyingthecropthatwasupontheground. AndthisIthoughtsojustareproofthatIresolvedforthefuturetohavetwoorthreeyears’cornbeforehand,sothat,whatevermightcome,Imightnotperishforwantofbread.
