Iwaslordofthewholemanor;or,ifIpleased,ImightcallmyselfkingoremperoroverthewholecountrywhichIhadpossessionof. Therewerenorivals:Ihadnocompetitor,nonetodisputesovereigntyorcommandwithme. Imighthaveraisedship-loadingsofcorn,butIhadnouseforit; soIletaslittlegrowasIthoughtenoughformyoccasion. Ihadtortoiseorturtlesenough,butnowandthenonewasasmuchasIcouldputtoanyuse. Ihadtimberenoughtohavebuiltafleetofships. Ihadgrapesenoughtohavemadewine,ortohavecuredintoraisins,tohaveloadedthatfleetwhentheyhadbeenbuilt.
ButallIcouldmakeuseofwasallthatwasvaluable. Ihadenoughtoeatandtosupplymywants,andwhatwasalltheresttome? IfIkilledmorefleshthanIcouldeat,thedogmusteatit,orthevermin.IfIsowedmorecornthanIcouldeat,itmustbespoiled. ThetreesthatIcutdownwerelyingtorotontheground; Icouldmakenomoreuseofthemthanforfuel,andthatIhadnooccasionforbuttodressmyfood.
