           Rawdonopenedthedoorandwentin.Alittletablewithadinnerwaslaidoutandwineandplate.SteynewashangingoverthesofaonwhichBeckysat.Thewretchedwomanwasinabrilliantfulltoilette,herarmsandallherfingerssparklingwithbraceletsandrings,andthebrilliantsonherbreastwhichSteynehadgivenher.Hehadherhandinhis,andwasbowingoverittokissit,whenBeckystartedupwithafaintscreamasshecaughtsightofRawdon’swhiteface.Atthenextinstantshetriedasmile,ahorridsmile,asiftowelcomeherhusband;andSteyneroseup,grindinghisteeth,pale,andwithfuryinhislooks.
