AlltheworldknowsthatLordSteyne’stownpalacestandsinGauntSquare,outofwhichGreatGauntStreetleads,whitherwefirstconductedRebecca,inthetimeofthedepartedSirPittCrawley.PeeringovertherailingsandthroughtheblacktreesintothegardenoftheSquare,youseeafewmiserablegovernesseswithwan-facedpupilswanderingroundandroundit,androundthedrearygrass-plotinthecentreofwhichrisesthestatueofLordGaunt,whofoughtatMinden,inathree-tailedwig,andotherwisehabitedlikeaRomanEmperor.GauntHouseoccupiesnearlyasideoftheSquare.Theremainingthreesidesarecomposedofmansionsthathavepassedawayintodowagerism—tall,darkhouses,withwindow-framesofstone,orpickedoutofalighterred.Littlelightseemstobebehindthoselean,comfortlesscasementsnow,andhospitalitytohavepassedawayfromthosedoorsasmuchasthelacedlacqueysandlink-boysofoldtimes,whousedtoputouttheirtorchesintheblankironextinguishersthatstillflankthelampsoverthesteps.Brassplateshavepenetratedintothesquare—Doctors,theDiddlesexBankWesternBranch—theEnglishandEuropeanReunion,&c.—ithasadrearylook—norismyLordSteyne’spalacelessdreary.AllIhaveeverseenofitisthevastwallinfront,withtherusticcolumnsatthegreatgate,throughwhichanoldporterpeerssometimeswithafatandgloomyredface—andoverthewallthegarretandbedroomwindows,andthechimneys,outofwhichthereseldomcomesanysmokenow.
