Duringtheprogressofthismemorableholiday,littleRawdon,ifhehadgotnospeciallikingforhisuncle,alwaysawfulandcoldandlockedupinhisstudy,plungedinjustice-businessandsurroundedbybailiffsandfarmers—hasgainedthegoodgracesofhismarriedandmaidenaunts,ofthetwolittlefolksoftheHall,andofJimoftheRectory,whomSirPittisencouragingtopayhisaddressestooneoftheyoungladies,withanunderstandingdoubtlessthatheshallbepresentedtothelivingwhenitshallbevacatedbyhisfox-huntingoldsire.Jimhasgivenupthatsporthimselfandconfineshimselftoalittleharmlessduck—orsnipe-shooting,oralittlequiettriflingwiththeratsduringtheChristmasholidays,afterwhichhewillreturntotheUniversityandtryandnotbeplucked,oncemore.Hehasalreadyeschewedgreencoats,redneckcloths,andotherworldlyornaments,andispreparinghimselfforachangeinhiscondition.
