PeggyO’Dowdisindeedthesameasever,kindinactandthought;impetuousintemper;eagertocommand;atyrantoverherMichael;adragonamongstalltheladiesoftheregiment;amothertoalltheyoungmen,whomshetendsintheirsickness,defendsinalltheirscrapes,andwithwhomLadyPeggyisimmenselypopular.ButtheSubalterns’andCaptains’ladies(theMajorisunmarried)cabalagainstheragooddeal.TheysaythatGlorvinagivesherselfairsandthatPeggyherselfisilltolerablydomineering.SheinterferedwithalittlecongregationwhichMrs.Kirkhadgotupandlaughedtheyoungmenawayfromhersermons,statingthatasoldier’swifehadnobusinesstobeaparson—thatMrs.Kirkwouldbemuchbettermendingherhusband’sclothes;and,iftheregimentwantedsermons,thatshehadthefinestintheworld,thoseofheruncle,theDean.
