ShortlyafterJos’sfirstappearanceatBrompton,adismalscene,indeed,tookplaceatthathumblecottageatwhichtheSedleyshadpassedthelasttenyearsoftheirlife.Jos’scarriage(thetemporaryone,notthechariotunderconstruction)arrivedonedayandcarriedoffoldSedleyandhisdaughter—toreturnnomore.Thetearsthatwereshedbythelandladyandthelandlady’sdaughteratthateventwereasgenuinetearsofsorrowasanythathavebeenoutpouredinthecourseofthishistory.
