Butwhenwegotintoawarmroominanexcellenthotelandsatdown,comfortablywashedanddressed,toanearlybreakfast(foritwastoolatetothinkofgoingtobed),Dealbegantolookmorecheerful.Ourlittleroomwaslikeaship’scabin,andthatdelightedCharleyverymuch.Thenthefogbegantoriselikeacurtain,andnumbersofshipsthatwehadhadnoideawerenearappeared.Idon’tknowhowmanysailthewaitertolduswerethenlyinginthedowns.Someofthesevesselswereofgrandsize—onewasalargeIndiamanjustcomehome;andwhenthesunshonethroughtheclouds,makingsilverypoolsinthedarksea,thewayinwhichtheseshipsbrightened,andshadowed,andchanged,amidabustleofboatspullingofffromtheshoretothemandfromthemtotheshore,andagenerallifeandmotioninthemselvesandeverythingaroundthem,wasmostbeautiful.ThelargeIndiamanwasourgreatattractionbecauseshehadcomeintothedownsinthenight.Shewassurroundedbyboats,andwesaidhowgladthepeopleonboardofhermustbetocomeashore.Charleywascurious,too,aboutthevoyage,andabouttheheatinIndia,andtheserpentsandthetigers;andasshepickedupsuchinformationmuchfasterthangrammar,ItoldherwhatIknewonthosepoints.Itoldher,too,howpeopleinsuchvoyagesweresometimeswreckedandcastonrocks,wheretheyweresavedbytheintrepidityandhumanityofoneman.AndCharleyaskinghowthatcouldbe,Itoldherhowweknewathomeofsuchacase.IhadthoughtofsendingRichardanotesayingIwasthere,butitseemedsomuchbettertogotohimwithoutpreparation.
