AssoonasRichardandIhadheldtheconversationofwhichIhavegivenanaccount,RichardcommunicatedthestateofhismindtoMr.Jarndyce.Idoubtifmyguardianwerealtogethertakenbysurprisewhenhereceivedtherepresentation,thoughitcausedhimmuchuneasinessanddisappointment.HeandRichardwereoftenclosetedtogether,lateatnightandearlyinthemorning,andpassedwholedaysinLondon,andhadinnumerableappointmentswithMr.Kenge,andlabouredthroughaquantityofdisagreeablebusiness.Whiletheywerethusemployed,myguardian,thoughheunderwentconsiderableinconveniencefromthestateofthewindandrubbedhisheadsoconstantlythatnotasinglehairuponiteverrestedinitsrightplace,wasasgenialwithAdaandmeasatanyothertime,butmaintainedasteadyreserveonthesematters.AndasourutmostendeavourscouldonlyelicitfromRichardhimselfsweepingassurancesthateverythingwasgoingoncapitallyandthatitreallywasallrightatlast,ouranxietywasnotmuchrelievedbyhim.Welearnt,however,asthetimewenton,thatanewapplicationwasmadetotheLordChancelloronRichard’sbehalfasaninfantandaward,andIdon’tknowwhat,andthattherewasaquantityoftalking,andthattheLordChancellordescribedhiminopencourtasavexatiousandcapriciousinfant,andthatthematterwasadjournedandreadjourned,andreferred,andreportedon,andpetitionedaboutuntilRichardbegantodoubt(ashetoldus)whether,ifheenteredthearmyatall,itwouldnotbeasaveteranofseventyoreightyyearsofage.
