           WeallwenttoLondonthatafternoon,andfindingtwoplacesinthemail,securedthem.Atourusualbed-time,CharleyandIwererollingawayseawardwiththeKentishletters.Itwasanight’sjourneyinthosecoachtimes,butwehadthemailtoourselvesanddidnotfindthenightverytedious.ItpassedwithmeasIsupposeitwouldwithmostpeopleundersuchcircumstances.Atonewhilemyjourneylookedhopeful,andatanotherhopeless.NowIthoughtIshoulddosomegood,andnowIwonderedhowIcouldeverhavesupposedso.NowitseemedoneofthemostreasonablethingsintheworldthatIshouldhavecome,andnowoneofthemostunreasonable.InwhatstateIshouldfindRichard,whatIshouldsaytohim,andwhathewouldsaytomeoccupiedmymindbyturnswiththesetwostatesoffeeling;andthewheelsseemedtoplayonetune(towhichtheburdenofmyguardian’slettersetitself)overandoveragainallnight.AtlastwecameintothenarrowstreetsofDeal,andverygloomytheywereuponarawmistymorning.Thelongflatbeach,withitslittleirregularhouses,woodenandbrick,anditslitterofcapstans,andgreatboats,andsheds,andbareuprightpoleswithtackleandblocks,andloosegravellywasteplacesovergrownwithgrassandweeds,woreasdullanappearanceasanyplaceIeversaw.Theseawasheavingunderathickwhitefog;andnothingelsewasmovingbutafewearlyropemakers,who,withtheyarntwistedroundtheirbodies,lookedasif,tiredoftheirpresentstateofexistence,theywerespinningthemselvesintocordage.
