           Andifthereseemedtobebutaslenderchanceofherandherhusbandeverfindingoutwhatthemodelofdeportmentreallywas,whythatwasallforthebesttoo,andwhowouldwishthemtobewiser?Ididnotwishthemtobeanywiserandindeedwashalfashamedofnotentirelybelievinginhimmyself.AndIlookedupatthestars,andthoughtabouttravellersindistantcountriesandthestarsTHEYsaw,andhopedImightalwaysbesoblestandhappyastobeusefultosomeoneinmysmallway.TheyweresogladtoseemewhenIgothome,astheyalwayswere,thatIcouldhavesatdownandcriedforjoyifthathadnotbeenamethodofmakingmyselfdisagreeable.Everybodyinthehouse,fromthelowesttothehighest,showedmesuchabrightfaceofwelcome,andspokesocheerily,andwassohappytodoanythingforme,thatIsupposethereneverwassuchafortunatelittlecreatureintheworld.Wegotintosuchachattystatethatnight,throughAdaandmyguardiandrawingmeouttotellthemallaboutCaddy,thatIwentonprose,prose,prosingforalengthoftime.AtlastIgotuptomyownroom,quiteredtothinkhowIhadbeenholdingforth,andthenIheardasofttapatmydoor.SoIsaid,"Comein!"andtherecameinaprettylittlegirl,neatlydressedinmourning,whodroppedacurtsy."Ifyouplease,miss,"saidthelittlegirlinasoftvoice,"IamCharley.""Why,soyouare,"saidI,stoopingdowninastonishmentandgivingherakiss."HowgladamItoseeyou,Charley!""Ifyouplease,miss,"pursuedCharleyinthesamesoftvoice,"I’myourmaid.
