           SometimesIconsideredwhetherIshouldwritetohismother,butthatendedinmybeingconvincedthattoopenacorrespondencewouldbetomakethematterworse.Ialwayscametotheconclusion,finally,thatIcoulddonothing.Mr.Guppy’sperseverance,allthistime,notonlyproducedhimregularlyatanytheatretowhichwewent,butcausedhimtoappearinthecrowdaswewerecomingout,andeventogetupbehindourflywhereIamsureIsawhim,twoorthreetimes,strugglingamongthemostdreadfulspikes.Afterwegothome,hehauntedapostoppositeourhouse.Theupholsterer’swherewelodgedbeingatthecorneroftwostreets,andmybedroomwindowbeingoppositethepost,IwasafraidtogonearthewindowwhenIwentupstairs,lestIshouldseehim(asIdidonemoonlightnight)leaningagainstthepostandevidentlycatchingcold.IfMr.Guppyhadnotbeen,fortunatelyforme,engagedinthedaytime,Ireallyshouldhavehadnorestfromhim.Whileweweremakingthisroundofgaieties,inwhichMr.Guppysoextraordinarilyparticipated,thebusinesswhichhadhelpedtobringustotownwasnotneglected.Mr.Kenge’scousinwasaMr.BayhamBadger,whohadagoodpracticeatChelseaandattendedalargepublicinstitutionbesides.HewasquitewillingtoreceiveRichardintohishouseandtosuperintendhisstudies,andasitseemedthatthosecouldbepursuedadvantageouslyunderMr.Badger’sroof,andMr.BadgerlikedRichard,andasRichardsaidhelikedMr.Badger"wellenough,"anagreementwasmade,theLordChancellor’sconsentwasobtained,anditwasallsettled.
