JarndycehadbeforeproposedtotakeustoLondonforafewweeks,itwassettlednextdaythatweshouldmakeourvisitatonceandcombineRichard’sbusinesswithit.Mr.Boythornleavinguswithinaweek,wetookupourabodeatacheerfullodgingnearOxfordStreetoveranupholsterer’sshop.Londonwasagreatwondertous,andwewereoutforhoursandhoursatatime,seeingthesights,whichappearedtobelesscapableofexhaustionthanwewere.Wemadetheroundoftheprincipaltheatres,too,withgreatdelight,andsawalltheplaysthatwereworthseeing.ImentionthisbecauseitwasatthetheatrethatIbegantobemadeuncomfortableagainbyMr.Guppy.IwassittinginfrontoftheboxonenightwithAda,andRichardwasintheplacehelikedbest,behindAda’schair,when,happeningtolookdownintothepit,IsawMr.Guppy,withhishairflatteneddownuponhisheadandwoedepictedinhisface,lookingupatme.Ifeltallthroughtheperformancethatheneverlookedattheactorsbutconstantlylookedatme,andalwayswithacarefullypreparedexpressionofthedeepestmiseryandtheprofoundestdejection.Itquitespoiledmypleasureforthatnightbecauseitwassoveryembarrassingandsoveryridiculous.Butfromthattimeforth,weneverwenttotheplaywithoutmyseeingMr.Guppyinthepit,alwayswithhishairstraightandflat,hisshirt-collarturneddown,andageneralfeeblenessabouthim.
