           Itwasabrigof150tons,namedtheMacquarie.ItwasengagedinthecoastingtradebetweenthevariousportsofAustraliaandNewZealand.Thecaptain,orratherthe"master,"receivedhisvisitorsgrufflyenough.Theyperceivedthattheyhadtodowithamanofnoeducation,andwhosemannerswereinnodegreesuperiortothoseofthefivesailorsofhiscrew.Withacoarse,redface,thickhands,andabrokennose,blindofaneye,andhislipsstainedwiththepipe,WillHalleywasasadlybrutallookingperson.Buttheyhadnochoice,andforsoshortavoyageitwasnotnecessarytobeveryparticular.
