           Thispropositionwastakenintoseriousconsideration.Paganelonthisoccasiondispensedwiththevolleyofargumentshegenerallyindulgedin.Heconfinedhimselftothebareproposition,addingthatthevoyagetoNewZealandwasonlyfiveorsixdaysthedistance,infact,beingonlyaboutathousandmiles.

           ByasingularcoincidenceAucklandissituatedontheself-sameparallelthethirty-seventhwhichtheexplorershadperseveringlyfollowedsincetheyleftthecoastofAraucania.Paganelmightfairlyhaveusedthisasanargumentinfavorofhisscheme;infact,itwasanaturalopportunityofvisitingtheshoresofNewZealand.

           ButPaganeldidnotlaystressonthisargument.Aftertwomistakes,heprobablyhesitatedtoattemptathirdinterpretationofthedocument.Besides,whatcouldhemakeofit?Itsaidpositivelythata"continent"hadservedasarefugeforCaptainGrant,notanisland.Now,NewZealandwasnothingbutanisland.Thisseemeddecisive.Whether,forthisreason,orforsomeother,PaganeldidnotconnectanyideaoffurthersearchwiththispropositionofreachingAuckland.HemerelyobservedthatregularcommunicationexistedbetweenthatpointandGreatBritain,andthatitwaseasytotakeadvantageofit.

           JohnManglessupportedPaganel’sproposal.Headviseditsadoption,asitwashopelesstoawaittheproblematicalarrivalofavesselinTwofoldBay.
