Herethecurrentwasextremelystrong,andthisbrokethewhirlingeddy,andgavetheraftsomestability.JohnandWilsonseizedtheiroarsagain,andmanagedtopushitinanobliquedirection.Thisbroughtthemnearertotheleftshore.Theywerenotmorethanfiftyfathomsfromit,whenWilson’soarsnappedshortoff,andtheraft,nolongersupported,wasdraggedaway.Johntriedtoresistattheriskofbreakinghisownoar,too,andWilson,withbleedinghands,secondedhiseffortswithallhismight.
Atlasttheysucceeded,andtheraft,afterapassageofmorethanhalfanhour,struckagainstthesteepbankoftheoppositeshore.Theshockwassoviolentthatthelogsbecamedisunited,thecordsbroke,andthewaterbubbledupbetween.Thetravelershadbarelytimetocatchholdofthesteepbank.TheydraggedoutMulradyandthetwodrippingladies.Everyonewassafe;buttheprovisionsandfirearms,exceptthecarbineoftheMajor,wentdriftingdownwiththeDEBRISoftheraft.
Theriverwascrossed.Thelittlecompanyfoundthemselvesalmostwithoutprovisions,thirty-fivemilesfromDelegete,inthemidstoftheunknowndesertsoftheVictoriafrontier.Neithersettlersnorsquattersweretobemetwith;itwasentirelyuninhabited,unlessbyferociousbushrangersandbandits.
Theyresolvedtosetoffwithoutdelay.Mulradysawclearlythathewouldbeagreatdragonthem,andhebeggedtobeallowedtoremain,andeventoremainalone,tillassistancecouldbesentfromDelegete.
