Atoneo’clock,theyallseatedthemselvesontheraft,stillmooredtotheshore.JohnMangleshadinstalledhimselfatthestarboard,andentrustedtoWilsonasortofoartosteadytheraftagainstthecurrent,andlessentheleeway.Hetookhisownstandattheback,tosteerbymeansofalargescull;but,notwithstandingtheirefforts,WilsonandJohnManglessoonfoundthemselvesinaninverseposition,whichmadetheactionoftheoarsimpossible.
Therewasnohelpforit;theycoulddonothingtoarrestthegyratorymovementoftheraft;itturnedroundwithdizzyingrapidity,anddriftedoutofitscourse.JohnManglesstoodwithpalefaceandsetteeth,gazingatthewhirlingcurrent.
