LordGlenarvanwasreceivedbyagovernorsuppliedfromtheEnglishcolonyattheCape.HeinquiredatoncerespectingHarryGrantandtheBritannia,andfoundthenamesentirelyunknown.TheTristand’AcunhaIslesareoutoftherouteofships,andconsequentlylittlefrequented.SincethewreckoftheBlendonHallin1821,ontherocksofInaccessibleIsland,twovesselshavestrandedonthechiefisland—thePRIMANGUETin1845,andthethree-mastAmerican,PHILADELPHIA,in1857.ThesethreeeventscomprisethewholecatalogueofmaritimedisastersintheannalsoftheAcunhas.
LordGlenarvandidnotexpecttogleananyinformation,andonlyaskedbythewayofduty.Heevensenttheboatstomakethecircuitoftheisland,theentireextentofwhichwasnotmorethanseventeenmilesatmost.
Intheinterimthepassengerswalkedaboutthevillage.Thepopulationdoesnotexceed150inhabitants,andconsistsofEnglishandAmericans,marriedtonegroesandCapeHottentots,whomightbearawaythepalmforugliness.ThechildrenoftheseheterogeneoushouseholdsareverydisagreeablecompoundsofSaxonstiffnessandAfricanblackness.
Itwasnearlynightfallbeforethepartyreturnedtotheyacht,chatteringandadmiringthenaturalrichesdisplayedonallsides,forevenclosetothestreetsofthecapital,fieldsofwheatandmaizewerewaving,andcropsofvegetables,importedfortyyearsbefore;andintheenvironsofthevillage,herdsofcattleandsheepwerefeeding
