           Tristand’Acunhaissituatedin37degrees8’ofsouthernlatitude,and10degrees44’oflongitudewestofthemeridianatGreenwich.InaccessibleIslandiseighteenmilestothesouthwestandNightingaleIslandistenmilestothesoutheast,andthiscompletesthelittlesolitarygroupofisletsintheAtlanticOcean.Towardnoon,thetwoprincipallandmarks,bywhichthegroupisrecognizedweresighted,andat3P.M.theDuncanenteredFalmouthBayinTristand’Acunha.

           Severalwhalingvesselswerelyingquietlyatanchorthere,forthecoastaboundsinsealsandothermarineanimals.

           JohnMangle’sfirstcarewastofindgoodanchorage,andthenallthepassengers,bothladiesandgentlemen,gotintothelongboatandwererowedashore.Theysteppedoutonabeachcoveredwithfineblacksand,theimpalpableDEBRISofthecalcinedrocksoftheisland.

           Tristand’Acunhaisthecapitalofthegroup,andconsistsofalittlevillage,lyingintheheartofthebay,andwateredbyanoisy,rapidstream.Itcontainedaboutfiftyhouses,tolerablyclean,anddisposedwithgeometricalregularity.Behindthisminiaturetowntherelay1,500hectaresofmeadowland,boundedbyanembankmentoflava.
