The Flood

           Theyfell,andwerepulleduponlytofallagainandagain,andbepulledupagainandagain.Thelevelofthewaterswassensiblyrising,andlessthantwomilesoffthegiganticwavereareditscrestedhead.

           Foraquarterofanhourthissupremestrugglewiththemostterribleofelementslasted.Thefugitivescouldnottellhowfartheyhadgone,but,judgingbythespeed,thedistancemusthavebeenconsiderable.Thepoorhorses,however,werebreast-highinwaternow,andcouldonlyadvancewithextremedifficulty.GlenarvanandPaganel,and,indeed,thewholeparty,gavethemselvesupforlost,asthehorseswerefastgettingoutoftheirdepth,andsixfeetofwaterwouldbeenoughtodrownthem.

           Itwouldbeimpossibletotelltheanguishofmindtheseeightmenendured;theyfelttheirownimpotenceinthepresenceofthesecataclysmsofnaturesofarbeyondallhumanpower.Theirsalvationdidnotlieintheirownhands.

           Fiveminutesafterward,andthehorseswereswimming;thecurrentalonecarriedthemalongwithtremendousforce,andwithaswiftnessequaltotheirfastestgallop;theymusthavegonefullytwentymilesanhour.

           Allhopeofdeliveryseemedimpossible,whentheMajorsuddenlycalledout:

           "Atree!"

           "Atree?"exclaimedGlenarvan.

           "Yes,there,there!"repliedThalcave,pointingwithhisfingertoaspeciesofgiganticwalnut-tree,whichraiseditssolitaryheadabovethewaters.

           Hiscompanionsneedednourgingforwardnow;thistree,soopportunelydiscovered,theymustreachatallhazards.
