           Soonaconfusedsoundwasheardofbellowingandneighingandbleating,andaboutamiletothesouthimmenseflocksappeared,rushingandtumblingovereachotherinthegreatestdisorder,astheyhurriedpell-mellalongwithinconceivablerapidity.Theyraisedsuchawhirlwindofwaterintheircoursethatitwasimpossibletodistinguishthemclearly.Ahundredwhalesofthelargestsizecouldhardlyhavedasheduptheoceanwavesmoreviolently.

           "Anda,anda!"(quick,quick),shoutedThalcave,inavoicelikethunder.

           "Whatisit,then?"askedPaganel.

           "Therising,"repliedThalcave.

           "Hemeansaninundation,"exclaimedPaganel,flyingwiththeothersafterThalcave,whohadspurredonhishorsetowardthenorth.

           Itwashightime,foraboutfivemilessouthanimmensetoweringwavewasseenadvancingovertheplain,andchangingthewholecountryintoanocean.Thetallgrassdisappearedbeforeitasifcutdownbyascythe,andclumpsofmimosasweretornupanddriftedaboutlikefloatingislands.

           Thewavewasspeedingonwiththerapidityofaracehorse,andthetravelersfledbeforeitlikeacloudbeforeastorm-wind.Theylookedinvainforsomeharborofrefuge,andtheterrifiedhorsesgallopedsowildlyalongthattheriderscouldhardlykeeptheirsaddles.

           "Anda,anda!"shoutedThalcave,andagaintheyspurredonthepooranimalstillthebloodranfromtheirlaceratedsides.Theystumbledeverynowandthenovergreatcracksintheground,orgotentangledinthehiddengrassbelowthewater.
