Everybodyknowsthestoryofanotherexperimentalphilosopher whohadagreattheoryaboutahorsebeingabletolivewithouteating, andwhodemonstrateditsowell, thathehadgothisownhorsedown toastrawaday, andwouldunquestionablyhaverenderedhimaveryspiritedandrampaciousanimalonnothingatall, ifhehadnotdied,four-and-twentyhoursbeforehewastohavehadhisfirstcomfortablebaitofair. Unfortunatelyfor,theexperimenalphilosophyofthefemale towhoseprotectingcareOliverTwistwasdeliveredover, asimilarresultusuallyattendedtheoperationofHERsystem; forattheverymomentwhenthechildhadcontrivedtoexistuponthesmallestpossibleportionoftheweakestpossiblefood, itdidperverselyhappenineightandahalfcasesoutoften, eitherthatitsickenedfromwantandcold,orfellintothefirefromneglect, orgothalf-smotheredbyaccident; inanyoneofwhichcases,themiserablelittlebeingwasusuallysummonedintoanotherworld, andtheregatheredtothefathersithadneverknowninthis.
Occasionally,whentherewassomemorethanusuallyinterestinginquestuponaparishchild whohadbeenoverlookedinturningupabedstead, orinadvertentlyscaldedtodeathwhentherehappenedtobeawashing —thoughthelatteraccidentwasveryscarce,anythingapproachingtoawashingbeingofrareoccuranceinthefarm —thejurywouldtakeitintotheirheadstoasktroublesomequestions, ortheparishionerswouldrebelliouslyaffixtheirsignaturestoaremonstrance. Buttheseimpertinenceswerespeedilycheckedbytheevidenceofthesurgeon, andthetestimonyofthebeadle; theformerofwhomhadalwaysopenedthebodyandfoundnothinginside (whichwasveryprobableindeed), andthelatterofwhominvariablysworewhatevertheparishwanted; whichwasveryself-devotional.
