NeartothatpartoftheThamesonwhichthechurchatRotherhitheabuts,wherethebuildingsonthebanksaredirtiestandthevesselsontheriverblackestwiththedustofcolliersandthesmokeofclose-builtlow-roofedhouses,thereexiststhefilthiest,thestrangest,themostextraordinaryofthemanylocalitiesthatarehiddeninLondon,whollyunknown,evenbyname,tothegreatmassofitsinhabitants.
Toreachthisplace,thevisitorhastopenetratethroughamazeofclose,narrow,andmuddystreets,throngedbytherougestandpoorestofwatersidepeople,anddevotedtothetraffictheymaybesupposedtooccasion.Thecheapestandleastdelicateprovisionsareheapedintheshops;thecoarsestandcommonestarticlesofwearingappareldangleatthesalesman’sdoor,andstreamfromthehouse-parapetandwindows.Jostlingwithunemployedlabourersofthelowestclass,ballast-heavers,coal-whippers,brazenwomen,raggedchildren,andtheraffandrefuseoftheriver,hemakeshiswaywithdifficultyalong,assailedbyoffensivesightsandsmellsfromthenarrowalleyswhichbranchoffontherightandleft,anddeafenedbytheclashofponderouswaggonsthatbeargreatpilesofmerchandisefromthestacksofwarehousesthatrisefromeverycorner.
