Persuaded,inpart,bytheserepresentations,butoverborneinamuchgreaterdegreebyhisfearofFagin,Mr.Bolteratlengthconsented,withaverybadgrace,toundertaketheexpedition.ByFagin’sdirections,heimmediatelysubstitutedforhisownattire,awaggoner’sfrock,velveteenbreeches,andleatherleggings:allofwhicharticlestheJewhadathand.Hewaslikewisefurnishedwithafelthatwellgarnishedwithturnpiketickets;andacarter’swhip.Thusequipped,hewastosaunterintotheoffice,assomecountryfellowfromCoventGardenmarketmightbesupposedtodoforthegratificationofhiscuriousity;andashewasasawkward,ungainly,andraw-bonedafellowasneedbe,Mr.Faginhadnofearbutthathewouldlooktheparttoperfection.
Thesearrangementscompleted,hewasinformedofthenecessarysignsandtokensbywhichtorecognisetheArtfulDodger,andwasconveyedbyMasterBatesthroughdarkandwindingwaystowithinaveryshortdistanceofBowStreet.
