           ‘Butatsoearlyanage!’urgedRose.

           ‘Mydearyounglady,’rejoinedthesurgeon,mournfullyshakinghishead;‘crime,likedeath,isnotconfinedtotheoldandwitheredalone.Theyoungestandfairestaretoooftenitschosenvictims.

           ‘But,canyouoh!canyoureallybelievethatthisdelicateboyhasbeenthevoluntaryassociateoftheworstoutcastsofsociety?’saidRose.

           Thesurgeonshookhishead,inamannerwhichintimatedthathefeareditwasverypossible;andobservingthattheymightdisturbthepatient,ledthewayintoanadjoiningapartment.

           ‘Butevenifhehasbeenwicked,’pursuedRose,‘thinkhowyoungheis;thinkthathemayneverhaveknownamother’slove,orthecomfortofahome;thatill-usageandblows,orthewantofbread,mayhavedrivenhimtoherdwithmenwhohaveforcedhimtoguilt.
