Aftersomediscussion,inwhichallthreetookanactivepart,itwasdecidedthatNancyshouldrepairtotheJew’snexteveningwhenthenighthadsetin,andbringOliverawaywithher;Fagincraftilyobserving,that,ifheevincedanydisinclinationtothetask,hewouldbemorewillingtoaccompanythegirlwhohadsorecentlyinterferedinhisbehalf,thananybodyelse.ItwasalsosolemnlyarrangedthatpoorOlivershould,forthepurposesofthecontemplatedexpedition,beunreservedlyconsignedtothecareandcustodyofMr.WilliamSikes;andfurther,thatthesaidSikesshoulddealwithhimashethoughtfit;andshouldnotbeheldresponsiblebytheJewforanymischanceorevilthatmightbenecessarytovisithim:itbeingunderstoodthat,torenderthecompactinthisrespectbinding,anyrepresentationsmadebyMr.Sikesonhisreturnshouldberequiredtobeconfirmedandcorroborated,inallimportantparticulars,bythetestimonyofflashTobyCrackit.
Thesepreliminariesadjusted,Mr.Sikesproceededtodrinkbrandyatafuriousrate,andtoflourishthecrowbarinanalarmingmanner;yellingforth,atthesametime,mostunmusicalsnatchesofsong,mingledwithwildexecrations.
