Nowandthentheywerehonouredwithacallfromherladyship,andnothingescapedherobservationthatwaspassingintheroomduringthesevisits. Sheexaminedintotheiremployments,lookedattheirwork,andadvisedthemtodoitdifferently;foundfaultwiththearrangementofthefurniture;ordetectedthehousemaidinnegligence; andifsheacceptedanyrefreshment,seemedtodoitonlyforthesakeoffindingoutthatMrs.Collins’sjointsofmeatweretoolargeforherfamily.
Elizabethsoonperceived,thatthoughthisgreatladywasnotincommissionofthepeaceofthecounty,shewasamostactivemagistrateinherownparish,theminutestconcernsofwhichwerecarriedtoherbyMr.Collins; andwheneveranyofthecottagersweredisposedtobequarrelsome,discontented,ortoopoor,shesalliedforthintothevillagetosettletheirdifferences,silencetheircomplaints,andscoldthemintoharmonyandplenty.
TheentertainmentofdiningatRosingswasrepeatedabouttwiceaweek; and,allowingforthelossofSirWilliam,andtherebeingonlyonecard-tableintheevening,everysuchentertainmentwasthecounterpartofthefirst. Theirotherengagementswerefew,asthestyleoflivingintheneighbourhoodingeneralwasbeyondMr.Collins’sreach. This,however,wasnoeviltoElizabeth,anduponthewholeshespenthertimecomfortablyenough; therewerehalf-hoursofpleasantconversationwithCharlotte,andtheweatherwassofineforthetimeofyearthatshehadoftengreatenjoymentoutofdoors. Herfavouritewalk,andwhereshefrequentlywentwhiletheotherswerecallingonLadyCatherine,wasalongtheopengrovewhichedgedthatsideofthepark,wheretherewasaniceshelteredpath,whichnooneseemedtovaluebutherself,andwhereshefeltbeyondthereachofLadyCatherine’scuriosity.
