Hindleyhadgonefromhomeoneafternoon,andHeathcliffpresumedtogivehimselfaholidayonthestrengthofit.Hehadreachedtheageofsixteenthen,Ithink,andwithouthavingbadfeatures,orbeingdeficientinintellect,hecontrivedtoconveyanimpressionofinwardandoutwardrepulsivenessthathispresentaspectretainsnotracesof.Inthefirstplace,hehadbythattimelostthebenefitofhisearlyeducation:continualhardwork,begunsoonandconcludedlate,hadextinguishedanycuriosityheoncepossessedinpursuitofknowledge,andanyloveforbooksorlearning.Hischildhood’ssenseofsuperiority,instilledintohimbythefavoursofoldMr.Earnshaw,wasfadedaway.HestruggledlongtokeepupanequalitywithCatherineinherstudies,andyieldedwithpoignantthoughsilentregret:butheyieldedcompletely;andtherewasnoprevailingonhimtotakeastepinthewayofmovingupward,whenhefoundhemust,necessarily,sinkbeneathhisformerlevel.Thenpersonalappearancesympathisedwithmentaldeterioration:heacquiredaslouchinggait,andignoblelook;hisnaturallyreserveddispositionwasexaggeratedintoanalmostidioticexcessofunsociablemoroseness;andhetookagrimpleasure,apparently,inexcitingtheaversionratherthantheesteemofhisfewacquaintances.
