Shedidn’tthankhim;still,hefeltgratifiedthatshehadacceptedhisassistance,andventuredtostandbehindassheexaminedthem,andeventostoopandpointoutwhatstruckhisfancyincertainoldpictureswhichtheycontained;norwashedauntedbythesaucystyleinwhichshejerkedthepagefromhisfinger:hecontendedhimselfwithgoingabitfartherback,andlookingatherinsteadofthebook.Shecontinuedreading,orseekingforsomethingtoread.Hisattentionbecame,bydegrees,quitecenteredinthestudyofherthick,silkycurls:herfacehecouldn’tsee,andshecouldn’tseehim.And,perhaps,notquiteawaketowhathedid,butattractedlikeachildtoacandle,atlastheproceededfromstaringtotouching;heputouthishandandstrokeonecurl,asgentlyasifitwereabird.Hemighthavestruckaknifeintoherneck,shestartedroundinsuchataking.
"’Getaway,thismoment!Howdareyoutouchme?Whyareyoustoppingthere?’shecried,inatoneofdisgust.‘Ican’tendureyou!I’llgoupstairsagain,ifyoucomenearme.’
