Shelingered,andresistedmypersuasionstodepartureatiresomewhile;butasheneitherlookedupnorspoke,shefinallymadeamovementtothedoorandIfollowed.Wewererecalledbyascream.Lintonhadslidfromhisseatontothehearthstone,andlaywrithinginthemereperversenessofanindulgedplagueofachild,determinedtobeasgrievousandharassingasitcan.Ithoroughlygaugedhisdispositionfromhisbehaviour,andsawatonceitwouldbefollytoattempthumouringhim.Notsomycompanion:sheranbackinterror,kneltdown,andcried,andsoothed,andentreated,tillhegrewquietfromlackofbreath:bynomeansfromcompunctionatdistressngher.
