           Annefeltthatshecouldnothaveborneitifshehadnotbeengoingtotheconcert,fornothingelsewasdiscussedthatdayinschool.TheAvonleaDebatingClub,whichmetfortnightlyallwinter,hadhadseveralsmallerfreeentertainments;butthiswastobeabigaffair,admissiontencents,inaidofthelibrary.TheAvonleayoungpeoplehadbeenpracticingforweeks,andallthescholarswereespeciallyinterestedinitbyreasonofolderbrothersandsisterswhoweregoingtotakepart.Everybodyinschoolovernineyearsofageexpectedtogo,exceptCarrieSloane,whosefathersharedMarilla’sopinionsaboutsmallgirlsgoingouttonightconcerts.CarrieSloanecriedintohergrammaralltheafternoonandfeltthatlifewasnotworthliving.

           ForAnnetherealexcitementbeganwiththedismissalofschoolandincreasedtherefromincrescendountilitreachedtoacrashofpositiveecstasyintheconcertitself.
