           Gilbertreachedacrosstheaisle,pickeduptheendofAnne’slongredbraid,helditoutatarm’slengthandsaidinapiercingwhisper:

           “Carrots!Carrots!”

           ThenAnnelookedathimwithavengeance!

           Shedidmorethanlook.Shesprangtoherfeet,herbrightfanciesfallenintocurelessruin.SheflashedoneindignantglanceatGilbertfromeyeswhoseangrysparklewasswiftlyquenchedinequallyangrytears.

           “Youmean,hatefulboy!”sheexclaimedpassionately.“Howdareyou!”

           Andthen—thwack!AnnehadbroughtherslatedownonGilbert’sheadandcrackedit—slatenothead—clearacross.

           Avonleaschoolalwaysenjoyedascene.Thiswasanespeciallyenjoyableone.Everybodysaid“Oh”inhorrifieddelight.Dianagasped.RubyGillis,whowasinclinedtobehysterical,begantocry.TommySloanelethisteamofcricketsescapehimaltogetherwhilehestaredopen-mouthedatthetableau.

           Mr.PhillipsstalkeddowntheaisleandlaidhishandheavilyonAnne’sshoulder.

           “AnneShirley,whatdoesthismean?”hesaidangrily.Annereturnednoanswer.
