           “IthinkyourGilbertBlytheishandsome,”confidedAnnetoDiana,“butIthinkhe’sverybold.Itisn’tgoodmannerstowinkatastrangegirl.”

           Butitwasnotuntiltheafternoonthatthingsreallybegantohappen.

           Mr.PhillipswasbackinthecornerexplainingaprobleminalgebratoPrissyAndrewsandtherestofthescholarsweredoingprettymuchastheypleasedeatinggreenapples,whispering,drawingpicturesontheirslates,anddrivingcricketsharnessedtostrings,upanddownaisle.GilbertBlythewastryingtomakeAnneShirleylookathimandfailingutterly,becauseAnnewasatthatmomenttotallyobliviousnotonlytotheveryexistenceofGilbertBlythe,butofeveryotherscholarinAvonleaschoolitself.
