           Wasthisalivinganimal,agiganticmonster,amastodonathousandtimesthesizeofthoseenormouselephantsofthepolarseaswhoseremainsarestillfoundintheice?Inourframeofmindwemighthavebelievedthatitwassuchacreature,andbelievedalsothatthemastodonwasabouttohurlitselfonourlittlecraftandcrushittoatoms.

           Afterafewmomentsofunreasoningandunreasonablefright,werecognizedthatthestrangeobjectwasonlyagreatmound,singularlyshaped,andthatthemisthadjustrolledoffitshead,leavingittostandoutandconfrontus.

           Ah!thatsphinx!Iremembered,atsightofit,thatonthenightwhentheicebergwasoverturnedandtheHalbranewascarriedaway,Ihaddreamedofafabulousanimalofthiskind,seatedatthepoleoftheworld,andfromwhomEdgarPoecouldonlywrestitssecrets.

           Butourattentionwastobeattracted,oursurprise,evenouralarm,wasevokedsoonbyphenomenastillmorestrangethanthemysteriousearthformuponwhichthemist-curtainhadbeenraisedsosuddenly.

           IhavesaidthatthespeedoftheParacutawasgraduallyincreasing;nowitwasexcessive,thatofthecurrentremaininginferiortoit.Now,ofasudden,thegrapnelthathadbelongedtotheHalbrane,andwasinthebowoftheboat,flewoutofitssocketasthoughdrawnbyanirresistiblepower,andtheropethathelditwasstrainedtobreakingpoint.Itseemedtotowus,asitgrazedthesurfaceofthewatertowardstheshore.

           “What’sthematter?”criedWilliamGuy.
