           Forty-eighthourslaterCaptainLenGuyandhisbrothersucceededwithgreatdifficultyintakinganapproximateobservation,withthefollowingresultsoftheircalculations:

           Thisstateofthingslasteduntilmorning,withoutourbeingabletoaccountforwhatwashappening,whenataboutteno’clockthemistbegantodisperseinthelowzones.Thecoastonthewestreappeared—arockycoast,withoutamountainousbackground;theParacutawasfollowingitsline.

           Andthen,nomorethanaquarterofamileaway,webeheldahugemound,rearedabovetheplaintoaheightofthreehundredfeet,withacircumferenceoffromtwotothreehundredfeet.Initsstrangeformthisgreatmoundresembledanenormoussphinx;thebodyupright,thepawsstretchedout,crouchingintheattitudeofthewingedmonsterwhichGrecianMythologyhasplaceduponthewaytoThebes.
