Inspringtimeandsummer,theBermudagrassandcloveronthelawnbecameemerald,soenticinganemeraldthatitpresentedanirresistibletemptationtotheflocksofturkeysandwhitegeesethatweresupposedtoroamonlytheregionsintherearofthehouse.Theeldersoftheflockscontinuallyledstealthyadvancesintothefrontyard,luredonbythegreenofthegrassandthelusciouspromiseofthecapejessaminebudsandthezinniabeds.Againsttheirdepredations,asmallblacksentinelwasstationedonthefrontporch.Armedwitharaggedtowel,thelittlenegroboysittingonthestepswaspartofthepictureofTara—andanunhappyone,forhewasforbiddentochunkthefowlsandcouldonlyflapthetowelatthemandshoothem.
