AllthepeopleEllenhadknowninSavannahmighthavebeencastfromthesamemold,sosimilarweretheirviewpointsandtraditions,butherewasavarietyofpeople.NorthGeorgia’ssettlerswerecominginfrommanydifferentplaces,fromotherpartsofGeorgia,fromtheCarolinasandVirginia,fromEuropeandtheNorth.Someofthem,likeGerald,werenewpeopleseekingtheirfortunes.Some,likeEllen,weremembersofoldfamilieswhohadfoundlifeintolerableintheirformerhomesandsoughthaveninadistantland.Manyhadmovedfornoreasonatall,exceptthattherestlessbloodofpioneeringfathersstillquickenedintheirveins.
Thesepeople,drawnfrommanydifferentplacesandwithmanydifferentbackgrounds,gavethewholelifeoftheCountyaninformalitythatwasnewtoEllen,aninformalitytowhichsheneverquiteaccustomedherself.SheinstinctivelyknewhowCoastpeoplewouldactinanycircumstance.TherewasneveranytellingwhatnorthGeorgianswoulddo.
And,quickeningalloftheaffairsofthesection,wasthehightideofprosperitythenrollingovertheSouth.Alloftheworldwascryingoutforcotton,andthenewlandoftheCounty,unwornandfertile,produceditabundantly.Cottonwastheheartbeatofthesection,theplantingandthepickingwerethediastoleandsystoleoftheredearth.Wealthcameoutofthecurvingfurrows,andarrogancecametoo—arrogancebuiltongreenbushesandtheacresoffleecywhite.Ifcottoncouldmakethemrichinonegeneration,howmuchrichertheywouldbeinthenext!
Thiscertaintyofthemorrowgavezestandenthusiasmtolife,andtheCountypeopleenjoyedlifewithaheartinessthatEllencouldneverunderstand.Theyhadmoneyenoughandslavesenoughtogivethemtimetoplay,andtheylikedtoplay.
