           Whenshedepartedfromherfather’shouseforever,shehadleftahomewhoselineswereasbeautifulandflowingasawoman’sbody,asashipinfullsail;apalepinkstuccohousebuiltintheFrenchcolonialstyle,sethighfromthegroundinadaintymanner,approachedbyswirlingstairs,banisteredwithwroughtironasdelicateaslace;adim,richhouse,graciousbutaloof.

           Shehadleftnotonlythatgracefuldwellingbutalsotheentirecivilizationthatwasbehindthebuildingofit,andshefoundherselfinaworldthatwasasstrangeanddifferentasifshehadcrossedacontinent.

           HereinnorthGeorgiawasaruggedsectionheldbyahardypeople.HighupontheplateauatthefootoftheBlueRidgeMountains,shesawrollingredhillswherevershelooked,withhugeoutcroppingsoftheunderlyinggraniteandgauntpinestoweringsomberlyeverywhere.Itallseemedwildanduntamedtohercoast-bredeyesaccustomedtothequietjunglebeautyoftheseaislandsdrapedintheirgraymossandtangledgreen,thewhitestretchesofbeachhotbeneathasemitropicsun,thelongflatvistasofsandylandstuddedwithpalmettoandpalm.

           Thiswasasectionthatknewthechillofwinter,aswellastheheatofsummer,andtherewasavigorandenergyinthepeoplethatwasstrangetoher.Theywereakindlypeople,courteous,generous,filledwithaboundinggoodnature,butsturdy,virile,easytoanger.ThepeopleoftheCoastwhichshehadleftmightpridethemselvesontakingalltheiraffairs,eventheirduelsandtheirfeuds,withacarelessairbutthesenorthGeorgiapeoplehadastreakofviolenceinthem.Onthecoast,lifehadmellowedhereitwasyoungandlustyandnew.
