           HecouldnottellthemwhatthearmysawwhenitmarchedbackintoAtlanta,theacresandacresofchimneysstandingblacklyaboveashes,pilesofhalf-burnedrubbishandtumbledheapsofbrickcloggingthestreets,oldtreesdyingfromfire,theircharredlimbstumblingtothegroundinthecoldwind.Herememberedhowthesighthadturnedhimsick,rememberedthebittercursesoftheConfederateswhentheysawtheremainsofthetown.Hehopedtheladieswouldneverhearofthehorrorsofthelootedcemetery,forthey’dnevergetoverthat.CharlieHamiltonandMelanie’smotherandfatherwereburiedthere.ThesightofthatcemeterystillgaveFranknightmares.Hopingtofindjewelryburiedwiththedead,theYankeesoldiershadbrokenopenvaults,dugupgraves.Theyhadrobbedthebodies,strippedfromthecoffinsgoldandsilvernameplates,silvertrimmingsandsilverhandles.Theskeletonsandcorpses,flunghelterskelteramongtheirsplinteredcaskets,layexposedandsopitiful.

           AndFrankcouldn’ttellthemaboutthedogsandthecats.Ladiessetsuchastorebypets.Butthethousandsofstarvinganimals,lefthomelesswhentheirmastershadbeensorudelyevacuated,hadshockedhimalmostasmuchasthecemetery,forFranklovedcatsanddogs.Theanimalshadbeenfrightened,cold,ravenous,wildasforestcreatures,thestrongattackingtheweak,theweakwaitingfortheweakertodiesotheycouldeatthem.And,abovetheruinedtown,thebuzzardssplotchedthewintryskywithgraceful,sinisterbodies.
