           ForamomentScarlettpausedbeforeanswering.Sheknewtheverynextquestionwouldbe:"Andhowareallyourfolks?Andhowisyourdearmother?"SheknewshecouldnottellthemEllenwasdead.Sheknewthatifshespokethosewordsorevenletherselfthinkoftheminthepresenceofthesesympatheticwomen,shewouldburstintoastormoftearsandcryuntilshewassick.Andshecouldnotletherselfcry.Shehadnotreallycriedsinceshecamehomeandsheknewthatifsheonceletdownthefloodgates,hercloselyhusbandedcouragewouldallbegone.Butsheknew,too,lookingwithconfusionatthefriendlyfacesabouther,thatifshewithheldthenewsofEllen’sdeath,theFontaineswouldneverforgiveher.GrandmainparticularwasdevotedtoEllenandtherewereveryfewpeopleintheCountyforwhomtheoldladygaveasnapofherskinnyfingers.

           "That’sthefirsttimeIeverheardofaYankeedoingadecentthing,"saidGrandma,asifsheregrettedhearinganythinggoodabouttheinvaders."Andhowarethegirlsnow?"

           "Oh,theyarebetter,muchbetter,almostwellbutquiteweak,"answeredScarlett.
