           "Gobacktobed,silly,you’llkillyourself!"Scarlettcried,butthehalf-nakedMelaniemadeherpainfulwaydownintothelowerhall.

           "Scarlett,"shewhispered,"wemustgethimoutofhereandburyhim.Hemaynotbealoneandiftheyfindhimhere"ShesteadiedherselfonScarlett’sarm.

           "Hemustbealone,"saidScarlett."Ididn’tseeanyoneelsefromtheupstairswindow.Hemustbeadeserter."

           "Evenifheisalone,noonemustknowaboutit.Thenegroesmighttalkandthenthey’dcomeandgetyou.Scarlett,wemustgethimhiddenbeforethefolkscomebackfromtheswamp."

           HermindproddedtoactionbythefeverishurgencyofMelanie’svoice,Scarlettthoughthard.

           "IcouldburyhiminthecornerofthegardenunderthearborthegroundissofttherewherePorkdugupthewhiskybarrel.ButhowwillIgethimthere?"

           "We’llbothtakealeganddraghim,"saidMelaniefirmly.

           Reluctantly,Scarlett’sadmirationwentstillhigher.
