           Rhettturnedthehorse’sslowfeetwestwardfromPeachtreeandthewobblingwagonjouncedintotheruttylanewithaviolencethatwrenchedanabruptlystifledmoanfromMelanie.Darktreesinterlacedabovetheirheads,darksilenthousesloomeduponeithersideandthewhitepalingsoffencesgleamedfaintlylikearowoftombstones.Thenarrowstreetwasadimtunnel,butfaintlythroughthethickleafyceilingthehideousredglowoftheskypenetratedandshadowschasedoneanotherdownthedarkwaylikemadghosts.Thesmellofsmokecamestrongerandstronger,andonthewingsofthehotbreezecameapandemoniumofsoundfromthecenteroftown,yells,thedullrumblingofheavyarmywagonsandthesteadytrampofmarchingfeet.
