           NotforHoodthecautioustacticsofGeneralJohnston.HeassaultedtheYankeesontheeast,heassaultedthemonthewest.Shermanwascirclingthetownlikeawrestlerseekingafreshholdonanopponent’sbody,andHooddidnotremainbehindhisriflepitswaitingfortheYankeestoattack.Hewentoutboldlytomeetthemandsavagelyfelluponthem.WithinthespaceofafewdaysthebattlesofAtlantaandofEzraChurchwerefought,andbothofthemweremajorengagementswhichmadePeachtreeCreekseemlikeaskirmish.

           ButtheYankeeskeptcomingbackformore.Theyhadsufferedheavylossesbuttheycouldaffordtolose.AndallthewhiletheirbatteriespouredshellsintoAtlanta,killingpeopleintheirhomes,rippingroofsoffbuildings,tearinghugecratersinthestreets.Thetownsfolkshelteredasbesttheycouldincellars,inholesinthegroundandinshallowtunnelsduginrailroadcuts.Atlantawasundersiege.

           Withinelevendaysafterhehadtakencommand,GeneralHoodhadlostalmostasmanymenasJohnstonhadlostinseventy-fourdaysofbattleandretreat,andAtlantawashemmedinonthreesides.

           TherailroadfromAtlantatoTennesseewasnowinSherman’shandsforitsfulllength.
