           Thewarmdampbalminessofspringencompassedhersweetlywiththemoistsmellsofnew-plowedearthandallthefreshgreenthingspushinguptotheair. 

           Sunsetandspringandnew-fledgedgreenerywerenomiracletoScarlett. Theirbeautysheacceptedascasuallyastheairshebreathedandthewatershedrank,forshehadneverconsciouslyseenbeautyinanythingbutwomen’sfaces,horses,silkdressesandliketangiblethings. Yettheserenehalf-lightoverTara’swell-keptacresbroughtameasureofquiettoherdisturbedmind. Shelovedthislandsomuch,withoutevenknowingshelovedit,loveditasshelovedhermother’sfaceunderthelampatprayertime. 

           StilltherewasnosignofGeraldonthequietwindingroad. Ifshehadtowaitmuchlonger,Mammywouldcertainlycomeinsearchofherandbullyherintothehouse. Butevenasshestrainedhereyesdownthedarkeningroad,sheheardapoundingofhoovesatthebottomofthepasturehillandsawthehorsesandcowsscatterinfright. GeraldO’Harawascominghomeacrosscountryandattopspeed. 

           Hecameupthehillatagalloponhisthick-barreled,long-leggedhunter,appearinginthedistancelikeaboyonatoolargehorse. Hislongwhitehairstandingoutbehindhim,heurgedthehorseforwardwithcropandloudcries. 

           Filledwithherownanxieties,sheneverthelesswatchedhimwithaffectionatepride,forGeraldwasanexcellenthorseman.
