           Inthestrangehalf-light,thetallpinesoftheriverswamp,sowarmlygreeninthesunshine,wereblackagainstthepastelsky,animpenetrablerowofblackgiantshidingtheslowyellowwaterattheirfeet. Onthehillacrosstheriver,thetallwhitechimneysoftheWilkes’homefadedgraduallyintothedarknessofthethickoakssurroundingthem,andonlyfar-offpinpointsofsupperlampsshowedthatahousewashere.
