           Ahundredvoicestookitup,sangit,shouteditlikeacheer.TheHomeGuardbugler,climbingontotheplatform,caughtupwiththemusicjustasthechorusbegan,andthehighsilvernotessoaredoutthrillinglyabovethemassedsinging,causinggoosebumpstobreakoutonbarearmsandcoldchillsofdeeplyfeltemotiontoflydownspines:

           "Hurrah!Hurrah!FortheSouthernRights,hurrah!HurrahfortheBonnieBlueFlagThatbearsasinglestar!"

           TheycrashedintothesecondverseandScarlett,singingwiththerest,heardthehighsweetsopranoofMelaniemountingbehindher,clearandtrueandthrillingasthebuglenotes.Turning,shesawthatMellywasstandingwithherhandsclaspedtoherbreast,hereyesclosed,andtinytearsoozingfromthecorners.ShesmiledatScarlett,whimsically,asthemusicended,makingalittlemoueofapologyasshedabbedwithherhandkerchief.

           "I’msohappy,"shewhispered,"andsoproudofthesoldiersthatIjustcan’thelpcryingaboutit."

           Therewasadeep,almostfanaticglowinhereyesthatforamomentlitupherplainlittlefaceandmadeitbeautiful.

           Thesamelookwasonthefacesofallthewomenasthesongended,tearsofprideoncheeks,pinkorwrinkled,smilesonlips,adeephotglowineyes,astheyturnedtotheirmen,sweethearttolover,mothertoson,wifetohusband.Theywereallbeautifulwiththeblindingbeautythattransfigureseventheplainestwomanwhensheisutterlyprotectedandutterlylovedandisgivingbackthatloveathousandfold.

           Theylovedtheirmen,theybelievedinthem,theytrustedthemtothelastbreathsoftheirbodies.
